Fortnite Tournament Tips
— points come from endgames
A tournament is not a series of games, it is a sum. Look once at what a placement is actually worth. After that you play every phase differently.
This is what FNCS replays and dated pro analysis say about it. Every tip carries its source and date, and every tip says how well it is backed up.
What a placement is worth in points
measuredIn the FNCS points system, reconstructed from the replays: 1st place is worth 65 points, 25th place still 2, and from 26th down you get nothing. From 6th to 1st is 25 points; from 25th to 20th only ten. That is why dying off spawn barely hurts, and dying in the midgame costs you the whole game. These numbers are for the FNCS system. For any other tournament, check its rulebook.
Seven tournament tips from the FNCS
Worked backwards from the points: first what counts, then how you get there.
Damage says nothing about your placement
measuredAcross 11 FNCS finals, damage and placement come out at ρ = −0.06, practically zero. In 3 of 11 matches the sign even flips. What is linked to placement is where you stand in the zone. Farming early is linked negatively.
Measure your run by time alive together
one sourceThe duo that won an FNCS Grand Final was only third in damage. Where they led was time alive together, and assists.

Play for placement, the kills come with it
one sourceThe kills that count come from the positions you take for placement anyway. Do not set a kill target before the round: with a number in your head, you want to end every fight fast. Take the kills you can get without trouble.

The Summit winners did not win a single game
one sourceThey were the only team to reach all eight endgames. Reaching the endgame, game after game, builds the sum that a tournament is decided on.

Land where your game does not depend on your neighbours
one sourceA spot whose plan relies on the team next door not keying you gives away control. And keep a second spot in mind: if someone lands on your head in an important game, land somewhere else.

Leave the POI early
corroboratedMeta Aug 2026The Grand Finals winners were out by minute 3: two minutes of looting, then straight into the centre of zone 1, without waiting for the storm to push them.

Get ahead of the teams nearby first, then play for surge. That way you keep the time lead your spot gives you.

Take reboots at a quiet spot
one sourceIdeally with water or open ground around it, so the reboot audio and visuals do not pull in third parties. That way your duo gets back into the game without the lobby noticing.

measured means: computed on Fortiq's own parsed replays, with the sample size named. corroborated means: two independent sources say the same thing. one source means: it holds until shown otherwise, and no further. Every tip carries its date, because the meta changes. Anything in the corpus without a date is not on this page.
Your tournament day in the replay
A replay stores the positions, eliminations, damage and placement of every game. So after a tournament day, do not count kills. Count this instead: in how many games did you reach the endgame? And where did it tip in the games you went out early? How to go through a match in the right order is in How to review your own Fortnite games.

The same, on your own match
Everything here is readable by hand in the replay. It just costs the length of the match, every time.
Fortiq reads the same file the game reads and lays it out for you: the rotations, every fight with its location, and the one moment that cost the match, with the position it happened in. You can then ask the coach about any of it. Three full reports a week, free, nothing to install.

Less than it feels. There are no points below 25th place, so dying off spawn barely hurts. Dying in the midgame, on the other hand, costs you the whole game.
